MILK: The ultimate food!

Updated: Feb 13, 2020

So MILK has been getting a bad rep lately. But let's bust some myths about the white stuff and find out why MILK is good for you!

Myth 1: Humans don’t need to drink MILK beyond babyhood

Well, MILK is just another type of natural food like meat, eggs, vegetables or fruit. It is not age-specific. However, MILK is the only food that contains enough nutrition to sustain a growing baby or child before they start to consume solids! That’s because MILK contains all the important nutrients like carbohydrates, fat, proteins, vitamins and minerals (only lacks fiber) that are needed to sustain life! That’s why MILK is recommended as an important part of our diets especially for growing children and convalescing patients to make sure that we get most of the nutrients we need in addition to other types of food. It’s nature’s All-In-One Wholesome Food! If you consume a balanced diet and add on a glass of MILK everyday, you can save your cash for a holiday instead of spending on unnecessary food supplements!

MILK is the best food ever because it flows from Mother Nature's love for all living things!

Myth 2: MILK makes me fat

WHOLE FRESH MILK only contains less than 4% of fat. That means, a cup of WHOLE MILK (300ml) contains only 12g of fats. Seriously, less than a bag of chips. Besides, if you remember your secondary school biology, vitamins A,D,E and K are found in MILK and are fat-soluble. So removing fat from WHOLE MILK only removes these essential nutrients from MILK so you end up paying more for a less. It’s like buying a car then having the car salesman tell you, “Oh, for a sleeker profile, you can opt for No-Side-Mirror Option at a premium price.” And then the car salesman then resells your side mirrors as a premium product (think cream, cheese and butter, hmmm, where do they come from?><) Drink WHOLE MILK to get your daily dose of healthy fats. Who says all fat is bad? Fat in MILK helps to dissolve and carry essential vitamins and minerals so that your body can digest and absorb them. Besides, fat in MILK actually helps you stay full for longer and curbs those snacking urges in between meals. Boost your diet plan by drinking a whole milk and fruit smoothie as a quick liquid meal and stay full and energized for longer!

Myth 3: I can’t drink milk because I’m lactose intolerant!

Many people say that they are lactose intolerant without understanding what lactose intolerance is. Lactose intolerance is a condition where you can feel bloated, gassy or nauseous half-hour up till 2 hours after drinking MILK due to lack of the lactase enzyme that helps digest lactose in MILK. Most people in Malaysia claim to be lactose intolerant while enjoying their bubble milk tea or Teh Tarik or latte in hand. Most of these drinks often contain more than 70% dairy content. Even our favourite roti canai contains milk powder! Contrary to popular belief, Malaysians are actually one of the highest consumers of dairy products in the region! At 47kg per person per year, we beat China, Thailand and South Korea.

Many people often mistake milk allergies with lactose intolerance. Knowing what kind of MILK you are drinking can go a long way to busting this myth. GOAT’S MILK is an alternative to regular COW’S MILK as GOAT’S MILK contains smaller fat and protein molecules thus making it easier to digest. FRESH JERSEY MILK i.e BRIGHT COW FRESH JERSEY MILK is also easier to digest due to Jersey MILK naturally having more A2 milk proteins than regular black and white (Holstein) milk.

Another way to enjoy the natural goodness of milk without the lactose content is to consume it in the form of Yogurt. FRESH MILK KEFIR, GREEK YOGURT, FRESH YOGURT, YOGURT DRINKS are a great way to get the wholesome goodness of MILK while keeping your tummy nice and quiet. Goood, nice tummy….shhhh

Myth 4: Plant Milk…’Nuff said.

Eh hem…..actually plants can’t produce milk. Only mammals can produce MILK. So move over Oat Milk, Almond Milk, Soya Milk and any kind of plant milk. They should be renamed “JUICE” instead! That’s how they are made! Oats, nuts and soybeans are juiced then cooked, sugar is added, then bottled as “MILK”. The only reason they are even called milk is because of their white, milky colour and the Marketing Brains behind Plant MILK like to associate them with MILK because there is no other food that is more wholesome than MILK! It’s like comparing apples and monkeys. MILK and plant juice are totally different things! They contain different types of nutrients that do not function the same way in our bodies. So please, pick up a bottle of REAL MILK for nutrition and leave the juice for dessert or detox.

Myth 5: Just because it is in the chiller, it must be Fresh Milk.

In Malaysia, people have been tricked for ages that any MILK that is found in the chiller is FRESH MILK. Well, let me inform you that 70% of the milk displayed in the chiller is not FRESH MILK. Yes, read on to find out more!

Actually, in Malaysia, the Food Act defines Fresh Milk as unpasteurized, unprocessed milk (milky secretion from mammals). So technically, brands can’t label their product as FRESH MILK. They have to label as Pasteurized Milk. So why do we see “FRESH MILK” all over the shelves? Because consumers like to see the word FRESH on the package. They think that because they see the word FRESH, well, it must be FRESH right? Nope.

This is where you need to be a little smarter in reading in between the lines of the labels.

Step 1: Check the expiry date

REAL FRESH MILK can only last in the chiller between 0-4˚C for about 14-18 days. Anything more and really, it’s no longer fresh. It amazes me how people can be tricked into thinking FRESH MILK when the expiry date on the carton is up to 12 months! If you went to the market and bought some fresh green leafy veggies, you probably can only keep it in the fridge for only 1 week. So don’t be fooled by the fancy packaging and the word FRESH on the bottle, check the expiry date. If it is more than 18 days, it is not really FRESH MILK and probably has been processed to death! Besides, nothing tastes better than a cup of rich, creamy, fresh, delicious MILK!

Step 2: Check the ingredients list

Anything that contains the words ‘Milk Solids’ actually refers to Milk Powder. That means the product has been made by reconstituting milk powder which is imported then mixed with water. Some products include Whey Protein, also a type of powdered milk but with fats and some proteins taken out during the process of making cheese. REAL FRESH MILK should only contain raw, fresh milk that has been homogenized and pasteurized to less than 70˚C according to accepted pasteurization methods. Because protein denatures at temperatures above 70˚C, so drinking milk that has been pasteurized at high temperatures honestly doesn’t taste as good and probably has lost some nutrients along the way.

Step 3: Buy locally produced milk

Anything that had to be shipped for more than 3 weeks probably isn’t that fresh anymore. The only way to get REAL FRESH MILK is to buy locally produced milk! Or ship by air (if you are a billionaire!). Locally produced milk is not only better tasting and better for you, it also helps our local farmers and economy. Our FRESH MILK is delivered to your neighbourhood stores within 48 hours from the farm. Any fresher and you’ll have to milk your own cow or goat.

So, don't be fooled by marketers, make your choice to choose better produce for a healthier you! Pick up your bottle of our FRESH MILK from our retail partners and enjoy!
