A Perfect Cup of Coffee
Updated: Feb 20, 2020
We talk of coffee. But every cup of latte contains 70% of milk. So what is the perfect cup of coffee?
Latte, cappuccino, kopi kaw kaw, we love our cup of coffee! Coffee makes up about 30% in every cup we drink and we wax eloquent on the different types of coffee beans, grind size, roasted-ness. But somehow we are strangely silent about the other 70% of the cup.
With a choice of a wide variety of coffee beans to different brew methods, unless you only like your coffee black, chances are MILK will be added to your coffee.
Actually, adding milk to your coffee is a great idea. MILK contains calcium which helps to temper the effects of caffeine and acidity in coffee to prevent signs of “coffee gut” i.e nausea or stomach upset after drinking coffee. Whole milk adds sweetness to coffee and reduces the effect of acidity in your gut preventing your stomach lining from getting destroyed from increased acid production due to effects of coffee. Tasty and healthy!
Coffee is also a notorious for causing calcium loss through it’s diuretic effects i.e coffee makes you pee more thus causing you to lose calcium through pee and reduces calcium absorption. Adding good quality, fresh, whole milk can help to mitigate that loss in calcium especially for older people.
Adding Fresh, Whole Milk to coffee is a great way to get your daily dose of essential vitamins and minerals as Whole Milk contains vitamins A,D,E,K,B and minerals such as calcium, potassium, iron etc. Whole Milk also contains natural sweeteners such as lactose that help to reduce the bitterness in coffee and giving your latte it’s smooth creaminess.

Proteins and Fat in Whole Milk help give the foam that latte art connoisseurs love. Perfect velvety foam that flows beautifully into the desired patterns. Of course there are so-called ‘professional barista’ milks which give perfect foam. However, these ‘barista’ milks are usually formulated with added stabilizers and emulsifiers to give the effect that you can easily get naturally from Whole Milk.
Why do we recommend Fresh Jersey Milk? Well, Jersey cows produce milk that is healthier, easier to digest and foam more easily and perfectly due to the slightly higher fat and protein content. Foam is created when well-chilled milk is heated using hot steam to generate a condition where air is mixed with protein and fat to develop into soft peaks of foam which are pourable. Too much protein and too little fat i.e in low fat milk causes the foam to be stiff and hard. Resulting in a solid mass of foam that can’t be poured into shape. Soy milk and other plant-based milk don't foam well due to the lack of protein molecules and fat.
So if you like your café au lait, latte or that perfect velvety cappuccino, make sure you use fresh, whole Jersey milk to create the perfect cup of coffee!
